Barry Ness is a researcher at the Centre for Sustaianbility Studies, LUCSUS. He received his Ph.D. in Sustainability Science in 2008 from Lund University. His current research focuses on the global “land grab” for biofuels and food production and the governance measures available to assist in creating sustainable land acquisition processes. Research also focuses on understanding complex sustainability governance challenges from a multilevel perspective, and the institutional development of sustainability science in recent years. Past research interests are diverse but focus significantly on understanding the variety of methods and tools for sustainability assessment, quantitative socio-ecological system modeling, particularly of food systems. Other research has also concentrated on municipal solid waste treatment and bio-based waste water purification systems. He has lecturing/course coordination responsibilities for the LUMES Master’s program at Lund University for the Energy & Sustainability, Sustainability Science, and Methodology courses. Barry was born and raised in Minnesota, but has lived in Sweden for over the past decade.
