Leopoldo Cavaleri Gerhardinger

Campinas State University - UNICAMP, Brazil

Leopoldo C. Gerhardinger is a Phd candidate in Environment and Society at the Centre for Environmental Studies (Nepam), University of Campinas (Unicamp) in Brazil, where he collaborates with an action research project funded by CAPES (Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) entitled “Participatory small-scale fisheries management in coastal Brazil: implications for fisher’s livelihood and biodiversity conservation”. He holds a Bsc in Oceanography (Universidade do Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina, Brazil - 2004) and a Msc in Conservation (University College London - 2008).

Leopoldo is also also affiliated to a marine conservation NGO named ECOMAR, with whom he engages with various facets of coastal and marine governance in Brazil either through research or environmental activism in designing and delivering marine conservation projects at various levels (Goliath Grouper Marine Conservation Network, www.merosdobrasil.org).

His general research interests ranges from marine fish ecology and ethnoecology to the theory and practice of governance. His PhD deals with multi-level coastal-marine governance with a focus on marine protected areas, including the role of leadership, social-ecological resilience and the need of institutional adaptation in times of accelerated social-environmental change. Leopoldo is under the supervision of Prof. Cristiana Simão Seixas.
