Mairon Bastos Lima holds degrees in both the natural sciences and the humanities, in addition to an interdisciplinary Master´s degree in environmental studies. After experiences in both South and North Americas, Mairon joined the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis of the IVM, the Netherlands, as a PhD researcher.

Mairon currently researches biofuel policies and governance, building on his Master´s work on food & agricultural policies, food security and sustainability (more). His current interests are on the emergence of agro-fuels and their environmental and socio-economic implications. More precisely, he looks at how such fuels could be used to promote genuine sustainable development, with the reduction of poverty and inequality. Which policies, policy-instruments and governance arrangements could lead us to that goal? At the international level, Mairon is interested in global governance and North-South relations, with attention to the evolution of bioenergy and agricultural policies, particularly in developing countries.

Related interests are climate change and agriculture, renewable energies, agro-ecology, socio-environmental interactions, political ecology, and international case study comparisons.
