Michael John Bloomfield is a PhD Candidate in the International Relations Department at the London School of Economics and Political Science where he continues his research training and teaching duties in global environmental politics and international political economy. He recently completed the 2010 Marie Curie Training Course on the Human Dimension of Global Environmental Change at the Freie Universität Berlin.
His doctoral project seeks to enter the debates surrounding the creation of global governance through the interactions of private actors by attempting to explain variation in how firms along the gold supply chain respond to NGO pressure for increased social and environmental standards and the implications of these responses for global environmental governance.
Before arriving at the LSE, Michael held the position of Industrial Initiatives Analyst with the Government of the Northwest Territories in the Canadian Arctic, working on socio-economic agreements between Northern communities and some of the world’s largest mining companies extracting diamonds, oil, and gas. He also holds a BA from the University of British Columbia in International Relations and an MA in Political Science from the University of Victoria.
