Dr. Fariborz Zelli has been an Associate Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Assistant Professor) at the Department of Political Science since December 2011. Since January 2014 he also serves as academic advisor to the Earth System Governance International Project Office, hosted at Lund University. He is also employed on the inter-disciplinary strategic research area BECC (Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a Changing Climate), hosted by Lund University’s Faculty of Science.
Fariborz further is an Associate Fellow of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik where he served as a Senior Researcher (2009-2011) and directed a country working group on deforestation in Peru. Prior to that, he was a Senior Research Associate at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, UK (2006-09).
Fariborz’ major fields of research include:
• the institutional fragmentation of global environmental governance;
• global climate governance and its overlaps with biodiversity and trade policies;
• deforestation in the Amazon;
• International relations theory and political philosphy
His recent book publications include Global Climate Governance Beyond 2012 (2010, Cambridge University Press, co-edited with Frank Biermann and Philipp Pattberg) and Climate and Trade Policies in a Post-2012 World (2009, United Nations Environment Programme, co-edited with Benjamin Simmons and Harro van Asselt). He has also published in Global Environmental Politics and WIREs Climate Change.
Fariborz received the outstanding Ph.D. thesis award of the University of Tübingen, and the award for outstanding teaching performance of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
He has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Environmental Studies Section of the International Studies Association (ISA). He is also a board member and speaker of the working group on Environmental Policy and Global Change of the German Political Science Association (DVPW), and a member of the Environment working group of the British International Studies Association (BISA).
Fariborz holds a Ph.D. in international relations (summa cum laude) from the University of Tübingen (supervisor: Volker Rittberger) and an M.A. with honors in political science, sociology and environmental studies from the University of Heidelberg (supervisor: Klaus von Beyme). He won a Ph.D. scholarship from the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU).
