Research Centre Chiang Mai
The Unit for Social and Environmental Research (USER) at Chiang Mai University is a small inter-disciplinary research group. We have long-standing interests in governance of natural resources and environmental change, including water and forests. Our approaches frequently combine place-based analysis with perspective of production-consumption systems. As a consequence we often must handle issues of scale, from considering very local institutions in a watershed in Thailand through to interactions with neighboring countries and distant trading partners.
We have joined the global alliance of Earth System Governance Research Centres with the intention of helping stimulate and support work on the problem of adaptiveness. During 2008-10 we expect to focus most our efforts in the water sector in Monsoon Asia. We are interested in exploring the politics around how people in the Mekong Region deal with both too much and not enough water each year. Societies here must respond to two-sided risks and environmental changes at several scales, for example, which effect flood regimes.
