A safe and just space for humanity: How the Earth Commission is addressing questions of justice, allocation and transformation

Joyeeta Gupta, University of Amsterdam
Diana Liverman, University of Arizona

Participants:

This innovative session invites feedback on the work of the Earth Commission, specifically the work focused on transformation and issues of allocation and justice. In the session, members of the Earth Commission working group on Transformation will discuss and debate the outcomes of workshops held on defining planetary justice and possible measures and targets for justice, as well as the approach to understanding the levers, actors and pathways for transformation. We will explore some of the challenges in integrating science-based targets and earth system science with justice goals and social science research, and of identifying quantitative measures of justice and sustainable development.

The session is designed to invite feedback on these topics, by posting short papers and presentations in advance of the conference, using interactive virtual spaces for feedback, and polling to invite participants to rank potential targets and strategies for transformation.
