Keynote Speaker

We are delighted to announce that Tzeporah Berman will give the keynote address at the Opening Plenary at the 2022 Toronto Conference on Earth System Governance.

Oil Politics in a World on Fire

After a summer of record heatwaves, floods and fires sweeping the planet and displacing millions of people, the world’s governments in New York in September did…very little to slow down the devastating impacts of climate change. Reflecting on her experiences meeting the CEOs of oil companies, advising governments, blockading fossil fuel projects and now building a campaign for a new global fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty, Tzeporah Berman joins the Earth System Governance Project to discuss what’s holding us back from climate progress, whether Net Zero commitments are hurting or helping and whether there is reason for hope in a world on fire.

Tzeporah has been designing environmental advocacy campaigns and environmental policy for 30 years. She is currently the International Program Director at Stand.earth and the Chair of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative. She is the Co-founder of the Global Gas & Oil Network, the former co-director of Greenpeace International’s Climate and Energy Program, and the Co-founder of ForestEthics (now Stand.earth). She has also held appointed positions advising the British Columbia government on climate policy and was appointed by the Alberta Government to Co-Chair the Oil Sands Advisory Working Group tasked with making recommendations to implement climate change and cumulative impact policies in the oilsands. She is the author of This Crazy Time: Living Our Environmental Challenge, is listed as one of the 35 Most Influential Women in British Columbia by BC Business Magazine and was awarded the YWCA Women of Distinction Award in British Columbia. In 2013, Tzeporah was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of British Columbia. In 2019, she received the Climate Breakthrough Project Award and in 2021 she gave a widely-viewed TED Talk presenting the case for a global treaty to phase out fossil fuels.
