Author Workshop on ‘Earth System Governance: Accountability, Legitimacy and Democracy’

The Netherlands
Wageningen
Event start: 20100628
End date: 20100629

Event description

Accountability is one of the key themes of the new 10-year interdisciplinary research project on Earth System Governance launched under the auspices of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP). At the inaugural conference of the Earth System Governance Project, held in Amsterdam from December 2-4, 2009, a wide variety of papers from various disciplinary perspectives were presented on mechanisms and sources of accountability, legitimacy and the democratic potential of earth system governance. This authors’ workshop brings together papers that explore the theoretical bases for a more deliberative and democratic earth system governance, as well as the prospects to ensure the legitimacy and accountability of evolving governance arrangements in issue areas ranging from climate change to biodiversity, biofuels and water governance. The papers are planned to appear in a special section of the journal Ecological Economics in 2011, to be guest-edited by Frank Biermann and Aarti Gupta. The workshop is organised under the auspices of COST ACTION IS0802 Transformation of Global Environmental Governance, Working Group III on Governance Architectures and Processes.
