As a post-2015 development agenda will be launched at a UN Summit in September 2015, the Earth System Governance Project, POST2015 and Keio University will jointly organize a one-day workshop with negotiators and stakeholders to explore possible institutional aspects of the science-policy interface for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The workshop is endorsed by Future Earth and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network. The workshop will take place on Friday 19 June 2015 in New York, USA.
The workshop will focus on the role of science and scientific assessments in the implementation process of Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop will consider what types of knowledge would facilitate successful implementation and monitoring process of Sustainable Development Goals, how such knowledge could be fed into the process, and what institutional architectures would promise to enhance overall effectiveness.
During the workshop, participants will be invited to discuss questions such as the following:
1. What is the role of usable knowledge for the transformation towards sustainable development within the framework of the SDGs, especially considering the need to address simultaneously human and planetary well-being? How can the science-policy interface inform the implementation of crucial thematic areas such as: food and agriculture, transformation of energy and the transformation of life styles?
2. What are the options for institutional design for science-policy interface for the post-2015 development agenda? How to link global assessment architectures with regional and national level assessment?
3. Adaptive nature of science-policy interface for the SDGs:
- What institutional architecture enables co-designing the research agenda with policy-makers (and stakeholders) reflecting the result of the review? (Possible adjustment after 5 years)
- How to institutionalize adaptive governance in science-policy interface regarding SDGs review and progress?
4. Input of the scientific community to the Global Sustainable Development Report (GSDR):
- How could the GSDR inform the work of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) and how could it contribute to review and follow-up, agenda setting and identifying emerging issues?
- What are options to institutionalize the future contribution of the scientific community to the GSDR?
