Key Highlights of the 2023 Annual Report:
Largest-ever ESG Conference
- The 2023 Radboud Conference, held in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, marked a record attendance for an ESG Annual Conference of over 670 participants from 45 countries. The event led to the development of the Nijmegen Agenda, a key output fostering transformative interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research on sustainability.
Research Impact
- In 2023, the Earth System Governance journal celebrated its first impact factor of 5.6, affirming its status as a leading publication in environmental studies, international relations, and political science. ESG scholars continued to publish groundbreaking research in collaboration with leading academic institutions and policy organizations.
Network Growth and Leadership
- The ESG community grew significantly, welcoming 46 new research fellows and marking a total network of over 557 members globally. Leadership updates include the addition of Kathryn Bowen to the Scientific Steering Committee and Jonathan Pickering’s appointment as co-chair.
Taskforces and Working Groups
- Two new taskforces, the Taskforce on Earth-Space Governance and the Taskforce on the Governance of Social-Ecological Systems, were launched in 2023.
Science-Policy Impact
- The ESG Project continues to influence global sustainability dialogues, with members contributing to major initiatives such as the Solar Geoengineering Non-Use Agreement and the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2023.
