Prof. Dr. Dirk Messner became the new President of the German Environment Agency on 1 January 2020. He was the director of the German Development Institute from 2003 to 2018. 

Director of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Bonn (since 2004); Co-Director of the Center for Advanced Studies on Global Cooperation Research, University of Duisburg-Essen (since 2012); Teaches political science at the University of Duisburg-Essen; Professor for International Political Economy at the University of Munich (2003); Academic Director of the Institute of Development and Peace, Duisburg (1996-2003); Numerous research activities in Latin America and Asia. Memberships: China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development; Co-Chair SDSN Germany (since 2013); Co-Chair T20 (since 2015); German Commission for UNESCO. (WBGU Member since 2004, Chair 2009–2016).
