“How we govern transport systems shapes climate outcomes, social equity and everyday life in a changing Earth system.”
Dr. Umar Obafemi SALISU is a transport and logistics governance expert whose work focuses on building sustainable cities, fair mobility systems and climate-responsive infrastructure. He is a lecturer and researcher at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria and has published over 65 scholarly articles on transport governance, sustainable mobility, urban safety and infrastructure planning.
His research contributes to the Earth System Governance Project by examining how decisions about transport and logistics affect climate change, inequality and environmental responsibility. He studies how policies, institutions and power structures shape access to mobility, exposure to transport risks and the distribution of environmental burdens. By placing transport governance at the centre of sustainability debates, his work shows how everyday systems like roads, public transport and logistics networks are critical to achieving climate action, social justice and resilient development.
Dr. Salisu’s work supports evidence-based policymaking and helps governments, planners and communities design transport systems that are low-carbon, inclusive and socially just. He is a recipient of several national and international research grants including the 2025 VREF Study Visit Grant; 2024 national research funds and actively contributes to global discussions on sustainable transport, urban governance and development in the Global South.
