About

Dr. Yanuardi Yanuardi is an Assistant Professor at Yogyakarta State University, Indonesia, and an external researcher at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He also provides strategic oversight to Ide dan Analitika (IDEA) Indonesia, an NGO focused on evidence-based policy furthering the science-policy interface for inclusive and just development. His research focuses on natural resource governance, deliberative democracy, social-ecological reflexivity, climate and energy justice, global sustainability standards, social-ecological (violence) peace, and political ecology. He is particularly interested in assessing governance architectures and pathways to sustainability from a critical political economy perspective.

His doctoral research provided a comprehensive analysis of governance strategies designed to overcome the “resource curse.” Previously, he led foundational studies on the institutionalization of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). He developed the ‘Social-Ecological Peace’ framework, a novel analytical tool for examining the transition from resource-fueled violence to peace, and has applied it in the post-conflict context of Aceh, a rich natural resource area, in a co-authored study. His article, “Improving governance quality through global standard setting? Experiences from the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Indonesia” co-authored with Dr. Marjanneke Vijge and Professor Frank Biermann, was recognized with the 2024 Elsevier award for its contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
