I am a social scientist working at the nexus of business and sustainability.
My research examines the creative ways businesses and global supply chains can be leveraged to improve jobs, strengthen communities, and contribute to more equitable and sustainable economies. All of my work is applied and designed to inform real-world decision-making.
Much of my research focuses on innovations that distribute profits more equitably within companies and across value chains, including fair trade, living wages, employee ownership, and various forms of profit sharing.
I support leaders across sectors in rethinking situations that initially appear to involve intractable tradeoffs: How can an intimate social enterprise expand into new markets without losing its core values? How can companies maintain a competitive edge while investing more deeply in their supply chains? How can business associations, policymakers, and advocates incentivize bolder commitments while also raising the bar for credible claims?
Drawing on more than 40 publications and over 20 years of work in business and sustainability, I maintain an active academic research agenda while also offering consulting and advisory services to companies, business associations, policymakers, and NGOs seeking innovative strategies to navigate tensions between market competition and sustainability goals.
