About

Hiba Mohammad is a researcher in sustainable water resources management with a focus on large river basins under climate change. She holds a PhD in civil, environmental, and architectural engineering from the University of Brescia, where her doctoral research examined the hydrological sustainability of the Tigris–Euphrates River Basin under climate change scenarios. Her work adopted an integrated, scenario-based approach, linking climate analysis with localized hydrological modelling through the development of four strategic crop scenarios, addressing a critical gap between climate projections and basin-scale water management decisions.

Hiba has been actively involved in EU-funded research and innovation initiatives. She served as a researcher at the University of Brescia within the AI4Water project (PRIMA Programme), focusing on artificial intelligence for smarter water management in the Mediterranean. Her role included the preliminary collection and analysis of hydrological data related to irrigation systems in the Capitanata irrigation district and the Fortore River Basin in southern Italy.

Her academic background also includes an MSc in Forest Science from the University of Padua, awarded with distinction (109/110), and a Diploma in Environmental Management from CIPSEM–TU Dresden, where her awarded final research focused on flood vulnerability assessment using GIS and remote sensing techniques. She was an Erasmus Mundus scholar under the MEDfOR Joint Master’s Programme, studying across universities in Italy and Spain.

Alongside academia, Hiba has worked at the science–policy–practice interface. As Lead Consultant for Première Urgence Internationale, she supported the strategic transition of water programming in Iraq and Syria from humanitarian response to development-oriented water resources management and climate adaptation, delivering situation analyses and structured development programs. She has also served as a research associate with the Save the Tigris Campaign, contributing research on rainwater harvesting and community-based water solutions in Syria.

Hiba is actively engaged in regional and international youth and policy platforms. She served as Coordinator of the Mediterranean Youth Task Force of Silva Mediterranea under the FAO (2023–2024), is a Youth Ambassador of the Blue Peace Middle East Youth Fellowship Programme, and is a fellow of the UNEP/UNESCO/BMUV International Postgraduate Course on Environmental Management.

Beyond her technical and policy work, Hiba is committed to knowledge dissemination and dialogue. She founded the blog enghibamohammad.com, where she writes reflective and analytical pieces on water governance, environmental challenges, and climate justice in Syria and beyond, bridging research, lived experience, and public communication.
