Johanna Coenen is a PhD candidate at Leuphana University Lüneburg in Germany. Her research focuses on governance institutions for sustainability in globally telecoupled systems. Her main research interest concerns how to govern the environmental impacts of long-distance interactions between social-ecological systems, such as land use changes associated with global commodity chains. She also conducted research on the environmental governance of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Johanna received a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences with a focus on International Relations and Sustainable Development from University College Maastricht and a master’s degree in Political Science with a specialisation in Global Environmental Governance from VU University Amsterdam. She spent an exchange semester at Queen’s University in Canada and a research stay at UCLouvain in Belgium.
