I am a Senior Lecturer in Global Energy Systems and an Associate Professor in the Research Programme Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (NRHU) at the Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University. My research examines how energy imaginaries are (re)shaped and (re)produced—both discursively and materially—asking by whom and for whom energy futures are envisioned and prescribed. I investigate how energy visions are governed, what processes make resources ‘come into being,’ and how temporal considerations influence decision-making. My work also engages with broader questions of energy and climate governance, with particular attention to participation and inclusivity.
In my current research projects, I focus on three aspects. I examines how entrenched, carbon-intensive “imaginaries” – the narratives and visions that sustain coal, oil, and other fossil fuel legacies – can be dismantled or reimagined to enable cleaner energy futures. First, I explore these dynamics through comparative studies of “carbonscapes” in Poland and the UK, advancing theoretical approaches that combine socio-technical imaginaries, assemblages, and materialities. Second, I investigate future uses of the urban underground, particularly in Stockholm, to address pressures from urbanisation, climate change, and the low-carbon transition. This involves developing conceptual tools and practical guidance for sustainable subsurface planning in areas such as transport, energy, and public space. Third, I work closely with regional governments to integrate scientifically grounded carbon budgets into climate and public policy, supporting counties in setting ambitious, realistic targets aligned with the Paris Agreement.
