I am a Professor in Sustainability Science at the University of Gävle in Sweden. I hold a PhD in Natural Resource Management and am a Reader in Geospatial Information Science. I have been fortunate to have great collaborations, leading to being listed as a Highly Cited Researcher (top 1%) in Web of Science (2019, 2020) and among the top 2% on the Stanford lists for many years.
From the University of Gävle, I lead a transdisciplinary and challenge-driven research environment on urban sustainability and resilience. It spearheads research along three main lines: Urban Commons, which is centred on social and eco-social sustainability; Urban Studio, heading the discourse on Social-Ecological Urbanism in urban design and planning; and Urban Transition, adopting a socio-technical lens on fossil-free urban development.
I am also the Program Director of Fairtrans, which focuses on the role of civil society organisations in climate transformation. This is a transdisciplinary research programme founded in 2021, funded by Mistra and Formas, and hosted by the Stockholm Resilience Centre at Stockholm University. The overall purpose of Fairtrans is to facilitate and accelerate a fundamental transformation towards a fair, fossil-free future. Through collaboration between researchers and civil society, especially large social movements, the programme creates scientifically based policy proposals for rapid transformation and to ensure both social sustainability and climate goals. It collaborates with movements and organisations with a total of over five million members, while at the same time studying whether co-creation with these actors creates legitimacy and leads to policies that are perceived as fair, motivating, and effective. It is about promoting innovative thinking around relevant societal goals today and advancing education and learning that ensure that no one is left behind during the transformation.
