I am a Doctoral Fellow at the School of Political Studies, University of Ottawa. My doctoral research examines the blue growthist assumptions of the fishmeal and fish oil industry, drawing on the global ecological political economy heuristic approach. This work draws on extensive interviews in West Africa and event ethnographies in Barcelona, Copenhagen, and Nice. I employ a degrowth critique of ecological overshoot and limits to analyze how the fishmeal industry may inadvertently deepen “blue transformation by dispossession.” I bring to the global ecological political economy a degrowth approach, which offers a creative pathway that questions the unrelenting pursuit of growth in the oceans driven by profit and expansion, while prioritizing well-being, equity, care, and ecological balance. I am broadly interested in the political and economic dynamics of the unfolding protein and energy transitions. My teaching experience includes courses on environmental politics, politics and globalization, and South-South Cooperation.
I have published recent work on Protein Transition in Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd (Sumner & Classens eds.). In 2023, I co-authored an article, “Degrowth, air travel, and global environmental governance: Scaffolding a multilateral agreement for a smaller and more sustainable aviation sector,” in Global Environmental Politics. My co-authored article on “Energy regime reconfiguration and just transitions in the Global South: Lessons for West Africa from Morocco’s comparative experience” also appeared in Futures in 2022. My 2017 article on “Whither the state? Mining codes and mineral resource governance in Africa, published in Revue Canadienne Des Études Africaines, also received the Honourable Mention for 2018 Extractivism. Beyond academia, I work with organizations and communities advocating for better rights for international students and their families.
