The Earth System Governance Project brings together hundreds of scholars from social science disciplines to advance research at the interface of earth system transformations and governance. We research in an interdisciplinary manner and from local to global scales. Earth system governance is a research challenge to better understand society in times of global system changes, from climate disruption to species mass extinction.

The project aims to

1) Expand the global mobilization of earth system governance researchers

2) Stimulate and facilitate research collaboration

3) Effectively communicate and engage with society

The Earth System Governance Project operates under the direction of a Scientific Steering Committee and its research agenda comes from the Project’s 2018 Science and Implementation Plan.

The International Project Office is hosted at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Faculty of Geosciences, Utrecht University, The Netherlands.

The Earth System Governance Project is a core project of Future Earth.

Our Vision is understand, imagine and help realize just and sustainable futures by stimulating a vibrant, pluralistic, and relevant research community.
