I have a PhD in History & Civilization from the European University Institute, with extensive research on Finland’s transition from a solar based energy system to a fossil based. I am examining how history can provide guidance towards future, how human activities have created pollution, but we have also solved earlier environmental problems like acid rain or the “ozone hole”, how we have caused the extinction of species but also created valuable landscapes. Its ultimate goal is to use historical research to provide a roadmap for the ongoing sustainability revolution and adaptation to climate change. Currently working in the University of Jyväskylä School of Resource Wisdom in a project, which maps the challenges of sustainable development in the region of Central Finland, examines the perspectives provided by scientific studies and develops criteria to take the pillars of sustainability (social, ecological, economic, and cultural) better into account in regional development.
