Abstract

The chapter gives an overview of global sustainability policy and politics. It is shown how international policy making on sustainable development has progressed from environmental policy toward recent approaches of Earth system governance. Key challenges of international sustainability politics are discussed, and institutional and instrumental options to improve sustainability policy are presented. The article ends with an outlook of the need for cosmopolitan policy making on sustainable development.
