In March 2023, the Earth System Governance project launched the ‘South-South initiative’, which goal is to further foster the ESG network in the Global South, increase exchange between scholars, and explore new relevant research themes.
Following up from the innovative session held during the 2022 Conference ‘Earth system governance and the Global South: an open conversation’ and a network-wide survey, further efforts are being made to address research topics and concepts, didactical, methodological, and pedagogical approaches, as well as science-society interactions that are relevant in different contexts in the Global South.
The initiative consists of the three following projects:

On the 20th of March 2023 from 10:00 to 11:30 CET or 16:00-17:30 GMT+7, the book “Environmental Governance in Indonesia” was launched during a hybrid event.
This event was endorsed by Earth System Governance, Utrecht University, RCCC Universitas Indonesia, BRIN RI, Faculty of Geography, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and KAGEGAMA. Four experts on environmental governance discussed the book and highlighted the main takeaways from this book in a panel. Following the panel, a discussion session with editors, chapters’ authors, and participants took place.
On April 26th, 2023, an online webinar on climate governance in Southeast Asia was held from 10:00 to 11:30 GMT+2 or 16:00 to 17:30 GMT+8, in partnership with The Indo-Pacific Circle.
This event featured presentations by three experts, and offered an analysis of climate change-related governance architectures and case study-based insights in Southeast Asia. This webinar also covered issues of justice and equity in the context of regional and global climate governance. The presentations were followed by an open discussion and Q&A with the online participants. The discussions was moderated by Dr Dhanasree Jayaram.
On June 16th, a webinar on “Building a Sustainable Indo-Pacific” was co-organized by the Indo-Pacific Circle (IPC) and the Earth System Governance project.
This webinar aimed to facilitate discussions on this theme, which also serves as the central focus of the upcoming issue of the Indo-Pacific Review.
Four experts, including two members of the ESG Asia-Pacific Working Group, shared their insights on various approaches to climate governance in the region. This was followed by an open discussion and Q&A with the online participants. The discussion was moderated by Ms. Rushali Saha.
On August 10th, an online webinar on “Decolonizing Environmental Governance from Community-led Perspectives” was held from 8:00 to 9:00 am GMT-6 / 4:00 to 5:00 pm GMT+2
During this event, Dr. Ranjan Datta delivered a presentation based on his interdisciplinary research, conducted in collaboration with four co-researchers. Their research aimed to comprehend environmental governance by studying conceptions and practices of land management, and to address the ecological, economic, and social challenges faced by Indigenous communities.
After the presentation, an open discussion and Q&A session were held with online participants.
On September 7th, an online webinar on Transboundary Aquifers between International Water Law and the Human Right to Water was held from 10:00 to 11:00 am (GMT+2).
During this event, Dr. Imad Antoine Ibrahim discussed the interplay between international law applicable to transboundary aquifers and the human right to water and sanitation.
After the presentation, an open discussion and Q&A session were held with online participants.
On September 13th, an online webinar on climate governance, opportunities and challenges in Latin America was held from 4:00 to 5:30pm (CEST).
This webinar included presentations by four experts from Latin America and provided an analysis of governance architectures related to climate change and insights based on case studies in Mexico, Central America, and Brazil.
After the presentations, an open discussion and Q&A session were held with online participants.
A day of South-South Dialogues’ workshops at the 2023 Conference at Radboud University
On October 22nd, before the main conference’s official start, a South-South Dialogues day will be organized to build upon the research network between early career researchers (ECRs) and mid/senior scholars from and/or based in the so-called Global South in a more structured manner.
This event will also be an opportunity to tackle the Conference theme ‘Bridging Sciences and Societies for Sustainability Transformations’ in different Southern contexts.

Exploring a call for a special issue in the ESG Journal
This Special Issue is expected to be released in 2024. Further information regarding the call for papers will be made available in due time.
