26-30 April 2009: Open Meeting 2009

The 7th International Science Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (Open Meeting), 'Social Challenges of Global Change', will take place 26-30 April 2009 in Bonn, Germany. At the Open Meeting 2009, the Earth System Governance Project will organise a special session on earth system governance research, and back to back with the conference, the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee will held its 2nd meeting.

16-18 October 2008: "From IDGEC to ESG - Passing the Torch"

In the evening of 16 October 2008, the start of the Earth System Governance Project was celebrated at a reception in New Delhi, India. At the reception, the former chair of the IDGEC Project, Prof. Oran Young, presented the first IDGEC-synthesis book "Institutions and Environmental Change. Principal Findings, Applications, and Research Frontiers", and Prof. Frank Biermann, chair of the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee, presented the Earth System Governance Science Plan.

Following the launch of the project and the reception, the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee held its first meeting on 17-18 October 2008 in New Delhi, India,

ISA´s 49th ANNUAL CONVENTION

25 March 2008: ISA Annual Convention 2008

The Earth System Governance Scientific Planning Committee held a workshop at the ISA Annual Convention 2008, San Francisco - United States of America. This workshop brought together scholars from a diversity of disciplines and geographic areas to develop a research agenda on ´earth system governance´ and to work on the Earth System Governance Science Plan. Participants in the workshop were members of the Scientific Planning Committee of the Earth System Governance initiative, and interested participants of the ISA Annual Convention 2008.

23 February 2008: 2008 Berlin Conference on the Human Dimension of Global Environmental Change

The Earth System Governance initiative organised a semi-plenary session at the 2008 Berlin Conference on the Human Dimension of Global Environmental Change. The 2008 Berlin Conference with the theme Long-Term Policies: Governing Social-Ecological Change has been held in Berlin, Germany on 22-23 February 2008 and has been organised by the Oldenburg Centre for Sustainability Economics and Management, CENTOS, Oldenburg University, and the Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU) of the Freie Universität Berlin.

United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali

8 December 2007: United Nations Climate Change Conference

The Scientific Planning Committee of the Earth System Governance initiative presented a first draft of the Earth System Governance Science Plan at an official side-event of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Bali - Indonesia. The side event with the title ´Earth System Governance and the Earth System Science Partnership: Theories and Strategies´ was organised by the Earth System Science Partnership (ESSP) and called upon social scientists to develop strategies for earth system governance and to find effective and coherent approaches to address global environmental change and its various phenomena.

2008 Berlin Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change / International Conference of the Social-Ecological Research

24-26 May 2007: Amsterdam Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change

The Earth System Governance Scientific Planning Committee met for the first time back-to-back with the 2007 Amsterdam Conference and held several consultations on the new research intiative during the conference, including with participants from developing countries and Eastern European countries and with keynote speakers and younger conference participants.
